Panowie - rzućcie proszę okiem na stronę https://8bit-museum.de/sonstiges/hardware-projekte/hardware-projekte-speichertester/ (https://8bit-museum.de/sonstiges/hardware-projekte/hardware-projekte-speichertester/) / polecam przełączyć język  ;). Znajdziecie tam cholernie fajny kawałek sprzętu - tester do pamięci SRAM/DRAM (m.in. 4116/4164/4464), kości E/P/ROM oraz układów z rodziny 74xx.

Polecam zapoznać się z dokumentacją i przykładowymi filmami - robią wrażenie :)

Napisałem do autora - cena płytki (główna i zasilanie 5V/-5V/12V) w wersji 7 i 8 to 25Euro, płytka w wersji 3 - 10 Euro. Przesyłka monitorowana to 15 Euro.

Najlepszy tester DRAM to sprawna plyta komputera.

Dwie uwagi:

Tester tez trzeba skombinowac, wiec ja wole skombinowac sprawna plyte.

trojacek is right, it is not possible to check for correct timings, even very expensive testers with much more power as a ATmega2560 cannot do this perfectly.

There are several issues a "simple" tester cannot do:
- checking timings: you need a very high resolution of 1-5ns to check if a rising or falling flank is correct. Only very expensice equipment (e.g. from Fluke) can reach this resolution.
- correct level of signals: you have to use analog ports to check if a signal level is correct. You have to measure the signal levels during the testing and check if the TTL levels are correct.

What a simple tester can do:
- it can check of a memory cell is in principle working
- it can check if refreshing is working in principle
- it can check if a row or column line is not working correctly

These simple tests can detect 99.9% of defect memory chips for an affordable price. Maybe you will have a false positive (you will recognize when you use this chip) or a false negative (then you loose one chip) but you will still have false positives and negatives also with expensive testig equipment.

So affordable memory testers are a good compromise (or spending thousands of EUR for having maybe 0.5% more accurate tests?).

Testing in a real computer is never a good idea. Depending on the number of RAM chip you want to test, you have to switch the computer on and off several times that will stress the old hardware and maybe this will lead to other defects. Also mounting and dismounting chips several times will stress the old sockets. So not really a good idea.

I have tested hundreds of chips whith it now and will not longer miss it. Also the feature to identify (EP)ROMs is great. I have quite often ROMs that are not labeled, and it is really convenient to put these in the tester and see that is is e.g. a "901447-05/39-03 (H3) / PET Basic 1/2 $E0" ROM ;)

And you can use the tester to create your own tests. The hardware ports are documented, so you can write also your own software if you want.

Jak widzę, oprócz DRAM (no i ROM, EPROM, SRAM), można testować sporo układów cyfrowych.

1) wybierasz typ układu do testowania

To radzieckie przynajmniej dostajesz uruchominone.

Hi,
first at all sorry for writing in English. I am the curator of the 8bit-museum.de, a website that exists for 25 years now, and the developer of the memory tester you are talking about. In case you have any questions please feel free to ask me about it, but let me give you some information about it.

I started developing a tester for SRAMs for the Arduino about two years ago to test some memory chips from an EACA Video Genie and the Commodore PET, because the popular TL866 does not support these types. Shortly afterwards I developed a circuit board for 4116 DRAMs, also for the Arduino. Since several supply voltages are required, I added a power supply shortly afterwards.

However, it quickly became apparent that pretty much every computer manufacturer used its own RAM types, so that more RAM types were added, e.g. for the Sinclair Spectrum the half-defective 3732. The Arduino tester quickly became too impractical (too little space), so that I have now reached Rev.7 and Rev.8 over several versions (these two versions are almost identical, but the 8 series allows a ZIF32 socket (I also plan to develop these as 7 series = ZIF28 and 8 series = ZIF32).

I saw that the discussion arose about two things:

1. The accuracy of a memory tester
2. The cost of the boards

Pabbe has already posted a message from me about this. Accurate tests simply cannot be done with an 8 EUR chip. To test RAS/CAS timings exactly, 1-5ns triggering would be necessary, but the ATmega already needs almost 60ns for a command. With the above we would be in the GHz range, i.e. a two-layer board would no longer be sufficient and much more expensive components must be used. Without counting the development costs, we would reach several hundred EUR retail price, with the small quantities and development costs probably even well over 1000 EUR.

What would you have won then? You can then test 0.5%-1% more closely, i.e. in the event of an error, one more chip would be correcty recognized or a false positive would mean that one out of a hundred chips would be rejected. This is unnecessary for a hobbyist and makes no sense.

I write on my homepage that I "deliver the boards at cost price". Strictly speaking, this is not correct. If I actually include all(!) costs (including the failed attempts with faulty designed boards, burned components or unsold boards), the boards would be much more expensive. So the price covers the current costs, i.e. I order a set of boards (I have to buy a minimum amount) and keep one for myself and sell the rest. The demand is not so high that every board always goes away. So I have to add a little buffer to avoid slipping too much, because then I could no longer finance the development. The time invested for the hardware (and we haven't talked about the software yet) is not included in the calculation (small fact: I currently have over 12 different versions of my memory tester which I strictly speaking do not need ;))

In total, over 1000 hours have gone into the development of the tester and I am constantly improving it.

In the meantime, he can not only test SRAMs and DRAMs, but also identify EPROMs (very useful if the label is no longer readable, unfortunately only possible from 2732), he can identify (EP)ROM content (e.g. if you find an EPROM and do not know which software is on it), he can test several TTL/CMOS devices.

During the development, I tried to choose a middle way between cheap but still useful and accurate.

With all components it should be less than 50 EUR when you build it. With the documentation and the simplicity, you also have the option of programming something yourself based on it. I think that I have managed to find a good compromise.

Hi,

there are new features available:

The newest firmware allows to save the content of all supported (E)PROMs on an SD card.
https://8bit-museum.de/neue-firmware-des-speichertesters-sichert-eproms-und-proms/

The second feature allows to save the test result on SD card. So the data that has been read during a test phase is stored in a file, so you can check which memory cells are good/bad.

There is an English manual that describes the features:
https://8bit-museum.de/sonstiges/hardware-projekte/hardware-projekte-chiptester/

Hi,

there is a new feature available: Testing of SIMM- and SIPP-modules (30 pins only, up to 1 Mbyte).

Also lots of bipolar ROMs have been added and you should be able to save the content on SD card:
7488, 74188, 74288, 74187, 74287, 74387, 74S271, 74S371, 74470, 74471, 74S270, 74S370, 74570, 74571, 74472, 74473, 74476, 74477, 74572, 74573, 74S450, 74S451, 82S23, 82S123, 82S126, 82S129, 93426, 93427, K155PE23, HM-7648, HM-7649

I was not able to test this feature myself because I do not have these ROMs in my chips collection, so it is still marked as "under testing".

"Innovation" is a bit of an exaggeration. :)

I was annoyed that I could not test my chips and was looking for a solution. From 16x4 it was not a problem, but this 16 bit chip simply couldn't be addressed due to the signal level.

Probably only a few collectors of pinball machines will need it, otherwise the chip will be hard to find.

Naprawdę dobrze to wygląda :)

I have improved the (P)ROM reading section, so not only "standard" ROMs can be saved but also ROMs with a very unique high- and low-active pinouts.

(https://i.postimg.cc/KRD2tJtL/roms.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/KRD2tJtL)

Commodore and ZX Spectrum like pinouts have already been tested. Unfortunately I cannot test if the QL ROMs can be read but there is no reason why not. ;)

It is possible now to add other special pinouts, now. Let me know if you have one that might be useful.

Hi,

I forgot to announce the new firmware update here:

Almost a month after the release of firmware v0.14, I am happy to announce a new update. In v.15 all changes from the beta versions are available and a few other additions. The logic tests in particular have been greatly expanded and many could also be checked with real chips.

=== 1 ===

As in every firmware update, new memory chips have been implemented:
- The MK4332 is another very special DRAM that is similar to the TMS4132 (a chip with the organization of 2x 16k x 1).
- ZIP-20 64k x 4 and ZIP-16 256k x 1 can be tested.

There are a couple of fixes:
- The CY7C150 can now be tested.
- A turn on the address lines of the 7488/188/288 has been fixed. Now these bipolar ROMs can also be read out.

=== 2 ===

Lots of logic chips have been added:
- 7436, 51, LS51, 53, H53, 54, LS54, 63, 70, 83, 87, 95, L95, 98, 101, 192, 103, 104, 105, 106, 108, 110, 111, 115, 116, 118, 159, 184, 185, 196, 388, 563, 518, 519, 564, 580, 620, 621, 622, 623, 638, 639, 689, 740, 741, 744, 804, C901, C901, C902, 4054, 4055, 4056, 4086, 4504,4929, 4930, 4931, 49700, 49701, 49702, 49703, 49704, 49705, 49713, 49714, 75494, 80C95, 80C97, 80C98, 88C29, 88C30

And a couple of logic chips have been corrected:
- 7492, 165, 193, 273, 283

Another menu item now contains tests for non-logic chips. Various 7-segment displays and dot matrix displays can currently be tested with this.

=== 3 ===

The number of self-defined SRAMs and DRAMs has been increased to three components each (and a small display error for chips >64k was corrected).

Not without reason: The tester supports pretty much all relevant chips. Now there are a few less important chips left, but I don't have them myself and these should be checked before I implement them. The definitions can be downloaded from the firmware website, so far these are the following chips:
- 74C930, 6518 (1k x 1)
- 74LS216, 74LS316 (64 x 4)
- 74LS217, 74LS317 (64 x 4)
- 74LS218, 74LS318 (32 x 8)
- A6173081, HY638100, IS63C1024 (128k x 8)
- AS5C2008 (256k x 8)
- AS6C4008, P4C1048, F7447APC (512k x 8)
- GTE 3539 (256 x 8)
- HM6503H (2k x 1)
- HM6503L (2k x 1)
- HM6533 (1k x 4)
- HM6561 (256 x 4)
- P4C107 (1024k x 1)
- P4C163 (8k x 9)
- TC5516, LC3516 (2k x 2)
Some definitions have already been tested successfully (see status line in the file).

The definitions can be read into one of the six slots (three each for SRAMs and DRAMs) and the chip can then be tested.
If you have the opportunity: Please make sure to test and give feedback. I would also be very happy to get a sample of these chips and to include it in my test suite.

=== 4 ===

Further changes:
- The self-test has been improved so that shorts with neighboring pins are now recognized.
- There was an error in the error handling of the "March-U" test, which shouldn't be visible.
- It is possible to switch the pull-ups for (P)ROMs/EPROMs on and off separately. Since lots of bipolar ROMs use Open Collector Outputs, they should normally be switched on.
- The writing speed on an SD memory card has been increased (the SPI is now addressed in a dedicated mode).

=== 5 ===

A bigger topic is still the revision of the logic tests. Even if the tests are comparable (or even more detailed) with those of a TL-866 or
other testers, it does not mean that they cannot be improved. I have therefore cleaned up the entire database and expanded a number of tests and partially changed them.

Due to the high number, this is relatively tedious and I have unfortunately not all chips available for testing. The summary table was extended with a traffic light scheme:

green: I checked this test with a component.
yellow (with version number): This Test was checked by a user with a component in the firmware mentioned.
red: This test has not yet been checked with any real module.

I would appreciate any feedback from successfully tested chips or incorrectly tested chips in order to complete or correct them.
I would also be happy to receive samples of the yellow/red marked chip so that I can verify the tests myself after an update.

Attention:
A few bipolar chips that require more than 4-5mA as input current cannot be tested directly. A separate chapter has been added to the manual for this purpose. If you want to use the Retro Chip Tester mainly for testing TTL components, you should think about the change described there.

=== 6 ===

The manuals have also been updated and can be downloaded from my website.
Many Thanks.

Even when the v0.17 has been officially released a few days ago, a new 0.18 beta 1 can be tested now:

Important:
This update resets the configuration to the default setting. After the update, the SD card and other settings may have to be made again.

=== 1 ===

Lots of new logic chips have been added:
- 74xx: 171, 276, 350, 351, 381, 382, 385, 436, 437, 446, 449, 568, 592, 593, 604, 605, 606, 607, 666, 667, 686, 687, 758, 759, 848, 873, 874, 876, 878, 879, 880, 1000, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005, 1008, 1010, 1011, 1020, 1032, 1034, 1035, 1240, 1241, 1242, 1243, 1244, 1245, 1620, 1621, 1622, 1623, 1638, 1639, 1640, 1641, 1642, 1643, 1644, 1645

The informative value of the test results is limited, however, since testing can only be done digitally.

=== 2 ===

PALs and GALs with 24 pins can be dumped (the same restrictions apply as for PALs/GALs with 20 pins).

=== 3 ===

There is a new option "Auto pullup" in the configuration. If the pullups for SRAMs or DRAMs are switched off, the tester tries to detect an Open Collector output independently and switches on the necessary pullups. If necessary, the pullups are also switched on for 4116 DRAMs. This feature is still experimental.

I have now created a Reddit community for the RCT.
So I don't have to be registered in countless forums and watch them.
